Gonna be a niche hater for a minute.

If you look at top JRPG lists or classic JRPG lists or ask around for recommendations, some guy is always going to recommend Lunar. And I played Lunar Silver Star Story in like.... 2018 or so. (I tried to play it a couple of times years before this and quit a few hours in so this might be an object lesson in not powering through things solely because they come highly recommended)

And other than some very nice pixel art backdrops there is imo absolutely nothing to recommend about it. Like I guess your corrupted girlfriend the evil empress is an interesting enough idea. It looked really nice and I suppose was somewhat ambitious if (IF!) you were playing it on the Sega CD in 1992 but 99% of the time the version of this game people are gassing up is the PlayStation version. Were people that dazzled by voice acting in 1999? It's not good voice acting. The anime cutscenes look kinda bad? There is nothing about the plot or the gameplay or the characters that stood out to me. Bog standard. Boring. Charmless. Unfun. I can only assume this is a conspiracy of ancient and bitter Sega fanboys.

I played a bunch of old turn based RPGs at about the same time as I played Lunar. Dragon Quest I thru V? Immortal classics. Phantasy Star IV? SUCH cool setting and presentation. The first Wild Arms? Kinda basic with just enough unique ideas and early PS1 charm to keep me interested. Mother 3? I feel I am not getting out of it what its greatest fans are getting out of it, but if I squint my eyes I can see the vision. Lufia I and II? Well, knowing just how much they're riffing on Dragon Quest now brings them down a couple pegs but they're still very cute and II has those puzzles and whole second game in the form of optional early infinite procedurally generated dungeon.

But THIS? The disparity between this game and the way people talk about it and the games they mention in the same breath has me ??????? Are we even looking at the same thing? Why would you recommend this game in the year of our Lord 2024 I cannot understand.

Trans Thoughts

So, sometimes I question how I feel about Kay getting this far into transition and bringing my masc self along for the ride, but no matter how dysphoric I get over stuff like my boy tits, I don't think I would've prevented it in a million years.

I'm proud of Kay, and Alice by extension. Getting to this point was hard, and required so much perseverance that I would N E V E R stand against.

It's not the worst thing in the world for me to deal with a bit of dysphoria, when it was so much worse for them. Me? I just dislike the breasts, but they were fighting against my AGAB and trust me when I say, I didn't start out looking that feminine. I had a beard that grew in middle school, I hit my current height of 5'9 when I was still in the earliest teenage years. People complimented my shoulders, compared me to my giant former Navy dad. Hell, I'm a boy and that still feels weird...

I wear baggy enough clothes to cover the curves. I'm decent with binding, as uncomfortable as that gets in Texas. FFS just became facial twinkification surgery, and my voice range is pretty wide. I'm still... feeling out how I talk? I've been reflexively speaking in a very fem voice, and when I try to speak in a deeper voice without imitating someone for drama's sake, my Southern accent gets really strong and I'm not sure I like that. I'm also certainly not going by our deadname, and chose Noah because it was short and a little softer.

I am a boy in a body that's well into transition to female, and as much dysphoria as I get, it's still nothing compared to everyone else. Maybe I don't get to be one of those sexy manly men with the braidable chest hair that're rapidly filling up my internet history, and maybe I'll have trouble dating as a gay man, but who knows? Maybe my softboy charm and the autism in my eyes will lure in someone who finds it very rugged and manly when I explain the plot to Phantasy Star Online Episode 1, and they'll kiss me midway through explaining who Red Ring Rico is and after we sleep together I can make pillow talk about how badass the transition into the fight with Dark Falz was.

Then they'll buy me more vests, because I can never have too many of those.

7 — What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like? . . .Draw him? At all? :'v There's not much fandom for Lucci, I'm afraid, and I can count the number of artists that I know are fans of him on one hand. (2, not including myself.)

12 — What's a headcanon you have for this character? that he's just like me, fr I see a lot of people raising eyebrows when people look at Lucciano and Placido side by side, and ask "That's the same guy?" and yeah their appearances are very different, but... I find it very reasonable. That the reason Lucciano looks nothing like Placido, despite the, what, 10-year age gap between them, is because Lucciano was very well taken care of and pampered. That he had pretty much everything. Then suddenly, he has nothing.

No more nice clothes, no more fine-tooth hairbrushes, no more nutritious foods, nothing but his own dirty fingernails. As someone with long hair (and a relatively okay household), I can see how it got the way it did. I've been in points where I had nothing but my fingernails to brush my hair with, and throw some loneliness and depression on top of that? Hair very quickly goes from beautiful to ugly. Not to mention, it gets caught everywhere. E v e r y w h e r e. If I'm running around in Lucci's situation, I don't have time to meticulously untangle my hair off of something it gets caught on. My only option is to jerk my head the other direction and let those locks be ripped out. Also, all of that stress would make anyone's hair grey before they're grown, so. ...Idk if that counts as a headcanon, it sounds to me more like an explanation OF the canon, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

14 — Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character. That SEGA style of fashion you'd see in PHANTASY STAR ONLINE, Sonic, or Jet Set Radio. It'd look amazing on him, especially as a skater. I'll dress him up like that one day, as I made a Lucciano character in PSO2:NGS and showed it off here before... But for now I'm not sure what specifically to put on him.

K. so I'm gonna share a Memory. I hold it fondly, but boy was I upset when it was actually happening. XD

It's about my older brother, the gamer.

So, when I was younger, I liked to watch my older brother play video games. I'd sit and watch, and he'd sit and play, and I always asked him to sit on my feet because they were always cold. Always kicked him when he farted on me, though. XD (Which is why sometimes he'd say no, and I'd wrap my feet in blankets instead, and then he'd sit on them. Good compromise.)

Anyway. He played a lot. I watched a lot. I almost never watched from the start of the game to the end of the game, though, so there were some storylines I straight up Missed.

At some point, he plays a game called Phantasy Star Universe. I almost always caught him playing the beginning, but I always missed the middle and end. It was a story that I had no clue about, and he eventually just stopped playing it and moved onto something else. (At least, I think that's what happened. XD)

So. This Would Not Do. I really wanted to know the story, and I either didn't know letsplays were a thing or couldn't find one. Which makes sense because Phantasy Star seems to be not super popular. XD So I decided to play the game myself.

ngl, I was bad at it. XD But I did my best. And, in a role reversal, my brother watched me play sometimes. He'd go in and out of the room like I did, and I focused on the story. I did My Best.

Now, the game has 14 chapters? I think??? Lemme double check. 12 chapters. My bad. ANYWAY.

I made it through chapters 1-6 by the Skin of my Teeth. But I did! I was so happy! When I got to chapter 7, I was trying really hard to pull an all nighter (my brother had done a couple, and I was going to play this game!), but I got stuck. That chapter was hard for me as I suck at coordination, and there was a section where you gotta waterski across the first bit, and I kept running into bombs, then there were big enemies that I kept running from and waving my saber Wildly at, and I kept losing support left and right to the plot, and I was a Ragged Mess by the time I hit the boss.

I think I died 3 times trying to get that boss, and I kept getting more and more frustrated. The only thing I remember is feeling myself about to cry (which I still don't like doing in front of people, but the aversion was Very Strong as a child, and my brother knew it), and he offered to beat the boss for me.

I said okay, and I vowed to myself that I was going to Watch and Learn. I was going to Watch and Learn and be able to get on with the story!

The next thing I know, I'm waking up to a beautiful shot of water moving and the main character talking to a character I'd seen before, but I had no idea what she was doing there.

"Oh, you're awake," said my brother (I think. This was years ago.). "I beat level 7 for you."

Which he did, and I was v grateful, but he also went on to beat chapters 8 and 9 and had just finished beating chapter 10.

Guys. I was distraught. How could I bet the game when I couldn't beat chapter 7? I was a chapter 7 skill level masquarading as someone competent on now chapter 11. Which had a wave-after-wave battle in it that I couldn't defeat. XD My poor brother had no idea what to do, so he showed me all the upgrades he gave my character (upgrades that I had no clue about until he did them for me) and how to use them.

I did have to go back to 7 For The Story, but when I got the upgrades my brother showed me and use hacks that he also showed me, I was able to beat the boss and continue with the game. The story gripped me until the end, and there was a Happily Ever After!

Now, Phantasy Star Universe is one of my favorite games. I really did like the story and the world and the characters. I like the structured game play and the memories that go along with it. That's one of the big reasons it's gonna be one of my my favorite games forever. That, and I was still playing it when one of my little cousins was born several years later. RIP game progress. You died for a Worthy Cause x2. XD
